LASER REFRACTIVE SURGERY

Laser refractive surgery is a highly sophisticated ocular treatment designed to eliminate or reduce dependence on glasses and contact lenses. Laser surgery is renowned for its elegance and extremely high levels of safety and success. We use the state of the art Alcon Wavelight EX-500 platform for our treatments. LASIK (laser in situ keratomileusis) and PRK (Photorefractive keratectomy) are the most commonly performed laser corrective treatments for nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism. LASIK and PRK take about 20 minutes to perform and both eyes are safely treated at the same time.

After LASIK, healing is rapid with the majority of patients able to drive the next day. PRK has a slower healing curve with most people back to driving after 1-2 weeks post-operatively. Some patients are more suitable for one type of laser treatment than the other. We do a comprehensive screening assessment to establish suitability for laser. Once suitability has been established, a more detailed examination is done to plan and fine tune the treatment. Consultations take place at the St Augustine’s consulting rooms and laser procedures take place at Lasersight in the Umhlanga Medical Centre on Thursday afternoons.
